» Zara hat ke, Zara bach ke

Yeh hai mumbai meri jaan....

Do not miss it.

Based on the lives of few people in the aftermath of July 11 blasts in Mumbai, it manages to leave a deep impression on the mind, and a hope for humanity. Directed by Nishikant Kamat, it contains very moving and evocative performances by Paresh Rawal (easily his best performance to date), K K Menon (superbly handles the best story of the lot), Soha Ali Khan (what a revelation), Irfan Khan, Madhavan, and Vijay Maurya.

The movie would keep on playing on your mind long after the end credits roll. The movie makes you notice, makes you cry, and makes you think - and in the end leaves you with a hope, and optimism about life. It is movie making at its best.

» Man and boy

There was a man,
and there was a boy

There was a man
Too unsure and too restrained
Happy to tread along the safe path
A lot of success he did gain
And a few dreams torn apart

But sometimes, when he would gaze in the skies
He would see the boy. With that gleam in his eyes

There was a boy
With a spirit so free
Like a bird in the sky
The way it should be

He had a closer look at the boy
A sigh escaped

The man was growing old
  waiting for the boy to
grow up and take control

The man was growing old
  waiting to be boy again

» Procrastination

On Seth Nickell's Blog [Link]

"John Perry (Stanford philosophy prof, and the best lecturer I have ever had) has an insightful and humourous essay on what he calls structured procrastination. The idea is basically that habitual procrastinators don't "do nothing", they just do "a something" that's not supposed to be their top priority. I don't know if this is true for everyone, but this is how I operate. Perry basically says the trick is to do "a something" that's worth doing (e.g. not a something like flipping through irc channels, which is how I tend to procrastinate)."

"When I first read this essay a couple years ago, I realized the most productive times of my life weren't when I took 14 units and avoided "extracurriculars", it was when I took 21 units and tried to do a million things at once. Sure, I failed to do some of those activities well, and sure I got bad grades in a couple of the classes...but on the whole I got a lot more done. Do you measure your success by what you fail to do or what you do? I think the natural tendency is to be risk averse and say that high success means low failure."

"Maybe an organized go-getter type person can get away with that: only start tasks you know you will accomplish. But for structured procrastination to work you have to be willing to do badly at some things so you can shine at others things. Of course, you will piss off organized people by doing this, because they will prefer consistent mediocrity to spotty "brilliance". And unfortunately, I think with systematic measures like grades people do tend to measure success as a lack of failure... Despite claims to the contrary, I'm pretty sure grad schools (and colleges) prefer all As to a grab bag of grades garnered by taking really hard courses."

» Boom

Interesting weekend.

Friday we decide to watch Boom. What a waste. One of the most horrible movies I have ever seen. While waiting in the queue for the ticket, Sethi met one of his friends who described the movie as - don't try to connect what happened before t - alpha; and t + beta; then the movie might seem ok to you. And I desperately wanted to see Pirates of the Caribbean.

» If you know Windows, you know Linux

Humor of the day:

"Linux is stable, robust, scalable, secure, and offers amazing cost advantages. Windows is easy to use, user-friendly, and familiar to just about every computer user in the world. Delixus combines the best of Linux and Windows by providing an easy to use, user-friendly, and familiar Windows-based GUI that securely accesses and controls Linux. "

"By empowering Windows administrators to operate as Linux administrators, the need for a dedicated Linux specialist is eliminated. "

"In some applications, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of a Linux server is reduced by 80%. "

Our goal is, "If you know Windows, you know Linux".

» Its Raining Outside

Finally a blog after a long time. I have a big problem with writing blogs. Whenever i wish to write, it turns out to be so long that ultimately i don't even start it. Last it happened when i wanted to write about the fantastic camping trip we went to with some TI guys. But [info]gaganm covered it in his blog, and what i wanted to write would have run in pages. Finally i ended up writing nothing.

Past few days have been usual. Masti mixed with monotony of daily life. One one hand, a lot of juniors are/were in our house due to which it has become really fun to be at home. On the other hand, job continues to be boring. Its now my tenth month in job, and i have not written even a single line of code. I already feel i have forgotten programming. Good part is the we are officially in coding phase from next week.

Nowadays, we are in filmoholic mood, thanks to Puneet Sethi. We are going out for like three or four movies a week. And Sethi makes it a point not to miss any junk movie. Yesterday we saw Charlie's Angels. Needless to say, it was junk. Thankfully, i was spared of Mein Prem Ki Deewani Hoon experience before that. I liked parts of Saaya. Story was junk, and movie's progress was too slow. But still, it was watchable which cannot be said about other movies bollywood is churning out. And Delhi looked beautiful in it. Also, it again reminded me how much i miss winters. Four years in Guwahati, and now Bangalore. It has been a long time i have enjoyed real winters cuddled up in razai and eating pakoras. In fact, i haven't stayed much with my parents for a long time. Its so cool to be with your parents and everyone involved in your khatirdari when you meet them after a long time.

Some new consultants have joined our center. Jealous of them as they get to work in Linux, and i am left to work on this sucky windows. I find Outlook the worst piece of shit out of Microsoft stable (inspite of its few useful features). Thankfully, after configuring gnus, atleast i have a sane news/mail client. Tried hard to convince my manager to also allow linux/solaris for development but couldn't convince him. Hopefully some day later.

Well, off now to watch Matrix Reloaded.

» Last Week

Went to watch Bhoot. Really enjoyed it, though others do not have the same opinion. Reconfirms why Ram Gopal Verma is one of my favorite directors. Chinka left for a trip with his IIMA batchmates. Got a sad news. Got upset. Got frustrated over reasoning given by few people in office. Wrote a mail which could be taken as flaming. Allright, it was taken as a flame. Got "I do not want to start an argument. Don't expect justification in every case", in reply cc'ed to a manager who asks me to refrain from replying on that subject before consulting seniors. Got extremely frustrated. Meanwhile, my stomachache returned back. Went home early. Reached home at 6 to find it locked. Tried to kill one hour at park. Returned back after 1 hour to still find it locked. Waited 15 minutes at door before thankfully kunal arrived. Sethi and Tandi shifted into out house with stuff for 6 people. 6 beds, matresses, lots of bags and suitcases, a table, blackboard, 12 chairs, a TV, a full set of kitchen stuff (gas, cylinder, utensils etc.). Always wonder at myself why do i get hurt so soon, and also why sometimes i am so spiteful. It was Sethi's birthday. So Bond and Gupta arrive from Hyderabad. Saturday at Purple Haze was too good. Played all the hit numbers. But a bad day for Bond. He lost his cellphone - an 8250. Also Motu was not present. Was unwell, after he was hurt due to bike skid. He was good today. Performed exceptionally bad at vocabulary test. 35 antonyms out of 60 and 16 analogies out of 40. Finally talked to gobind yesterday night. Some things going on and i don't know what to do. Today is the deadline for a document and i am in no mood to work :( Next hearing on 28th June. Have to look for a lawyer who can handle my case. Had dinner at China Pearl, Koramangala. I have really started enjoying Chinese food now. Finally cleaned up my almirah except for drawer. I hope gagan should be happy now.
